    How do composers, conductors, and soloists become celebrities? Explore the history of the symphony and concertos from Haydn and Mozart to Beethoven and Brahms through a variety of listening activities.

    Focusing on the contemporary transformation of these genres into complex, large-scale musical productions, both live and in broadcast, students will study the premieres and performances of masterworks and learn from the words of their composers and critics. Special attention will be given to great productions and the cherished musicians that bring these works to life. We will investigate how composers, conductors, and soloists continue to attract and mystify audiences, creating a celebrity culture surrounding their performances.

    Registration fees are $200 for the entire course (includes all class meetings). If you wish to register for an additional Community Music School course, each additional course is offered at a discounted fee of $150. All course fees directly benefit the School of Music. Please note that this is not a UF credit-bearing course.

    Symphonies, Concertos, and Celebrities is taught by Emily Theobald. The class meets Wednesdays from 7 - 8:30 p.m. July 3 - August 7.
