Do you love Beethoven’s symphonies, Mozart’s operas, and the piano music of Chopin? Are you hoping to develop the same appreciation for Anton Webern’s orchestral works, Philip Glass’s operas, and George Crumb’s piano music? This is the class for you! We will begin by articulating exactly what it is that draws us to these classics of Western art music such as melody, form, and meaning, searching for the presence of these same elements in modern music. We will study stage works, concert pieces, and other modes of performance art with respect to their historical contexts, developing listening skills that will lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of modern music.

The School of Music's Community Music School is open to all members of the community. To register for the course, click here.
